Have a Westmoreland County Library Card? Then you have access to the system’s digital collection. Down load the Libby app to your device and then look for “Westmoreland County Libraries”, all the libraries pool their resources into one collection to better serve our patrons.
After you find Westmoreland County Libraries, look for “Power Library”. This is Pennsylvania’s library for digital materials, databases, and more. You library card will give you access to this site’s resources as well.
Something to keep in mind. Unlike physical materials that can last as long as the items holds together, digital materials have a finite life in the collection. Access is based on an amount of time or the number of checkouts, then the item needs to be purchased again. Constantly renewing digital materials lessens the length of time that other patrons have to borrow them. Once the limit is reached, then access is closed, even though the item can still be seen in the collection. If the library has the budget, then they may repurchase the item, but that is not always likely. Digital materials are expensive, especially e-audiobooks, and the library can only purchase from one vendor.
If you’d like to donate to the digital materials collection, click the donation tab at the top of the screen and select “Other” to give an online donation. Email the New Florence Community Library at nflibrary@comcast.net and let us know about the donation (online donation are controlled by Westmoreland County Libraries).

PA Forward

The Pennsylvania Library Association’s 21st Century Literacies Initiative, PA Forward, was conceived to give voice to what the library community already knows, and what other states throughout the nation are recognizing:
With the right support, libraries are ideally positioned to become the community centers of information, technology, and learning that will fuel educational and economic opportunity for all of our citizens.
Libraries have moved far beyond just being book repositories. They’re agile institutions serving real-life needs. Libraries are the key to powering progress and elevating the quality of life in Pennsylvania by fueling the types of knowledge essential to success: Basic Literacy, Information Literacy, Civic and Social Literacy, Health Literacy, and Financial Literacy.
Basic Literacy – Libraries can push Pennsylvania to achieve one of the highest literacy rates in the country, a better trained and more skilled workforce, and a growing tax base, economy, and population.
Information Literacy – Libraries can help all Pennsylvanians learn how to use online resources and current technology to improve their education, to enhance their job skills, and to participate fully in a digital society.
Civic and Social Literacy – Libraries can give citizens of all ages the knowledge and skills they need to improve their lives, to contribute effectively in their communities, and to participate in civil discourse.
Health Literacy – Libraries can play an important role in helping citizens actively manage their own and their family’s well-being, making them effective partners with their health care providers and reducing costs.
Financial Literacy – Libraries can help citizens become informed consumers and guide individuals, small businesses, and other organizations to contribute to the economic vitality of their communities.
